a few high notes

Freelance writer Michael Menduno reports on the new economy, technology and underwater exploration from Silicon Valley. Before launching his freelance career in 1997, he founded, published and served as editor-in-chief of "aquaCORPS," the first magazine about "technical diving" (1990-1996), described by Wired magazine as the "Sea Geek's Bible."

Technical diving--a term coined by Menduno and adopted by the diving industry--is the underwater equivalent of extreme skiing: think deep, long dives requiring an ensemble of exotic technologies like helium-breathing mixtures and sophisticated decompression computers in order to stay alive. (For a hyperoxic rendition of just how extreme it can be, see: "Under Pressure," by Jerry Shine, WIRED 3.11.).

Prior to founding "aquaCORPS," Menduno, held management positions in marketing and strategic planning at Tymshare, Fortune Systems and Xerox, and headed a Palo Alto-based strategic marketing consulting firm, Menduno & Associates Inc. that specialized in technology start-up companies. He also worked on Capitol Hill as an economic analyst and liason to the Office of Technology Assessment, for U.S. Senator Ted Stevens (AK) after completing graduate school.

Menduno earned masters degrees in Management Science & Engineering, and Mathematics from Stanford University. His first computer was an IBM 360/30 mainframe which he operated nights at First Evanston Bank while attending junior college in Evanston, IL. He is now re-learning bass guitar after a twenty-year hiatus and hopes to be thumping out toons real soon. Doo wop doo wop.
